QMS certification (an abbreviation of the “Quality Management System”) is a verification carried out by a disinterested party, which results in issuance of the special Certificate of Compliance. Thus, compliance of the system of the company with a number of requirements described in the national and international standards is documented. Issuance of these standards containing the requirements for the QMS of the companies is performed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In Russia, national ISO standards are developed on the basis of the international ISO standards.

Despite the fact that QMS certification in the Russian Federation is voluntary, it is currently very popular. For Russian companies, ISO certificate is required to join in the SRO, to sign contracts with major partners, to participate in tenders, to attract customers and so on. The right to obtain the Certificate of Compliance is provided to organizations regardless of the type of their activity.

In most cases, QMS certification in Russia is carried out for compliance with the following standards:

  • GOST R ISO 9001-2015 (ISO 9001:2015) - Quality Management Systems. Requirements
  • GOST R ISO 22000-2007 (ISO 22000:2005) – Food Safety Management Systems. Requirements for Organizations Involved in the Food Chain
  • GOST R ISO 14001-2007 (ISO 14001:2004) - Environmental Management Systems. Requirements and User’s Manual
  • GOST 54934-2012 / OHSAS 18001:2007 - Personnel Health and Safety Management Systems
  • ISO 9001-2008, GOST R ISO 14001-2007, OHSAS 18001: 2007 - Integrated Management Systems
  • GOST ISO 50001-2012 (ISO 50001:2011) - Energy Management System for Compliance

  • Certification of the quality management system is voluntary, so the company is entitled to decide on the need for such certification, and to choose a certification body.

    Certification of the Quality Management System is carried out in three stages:

    Analyzing of the quality system documents.

    2

    Auditing of the quality system of the company.

    3

    Deciding on the auditing and issuing of the Certificate.

    In the first stage, the certification body shall verify documents of the company on implementation of all the requirements of the standard. In the second stage, the certification body auditors shall come to the enterprise and verify on-site, firstly, compliance of the documents with real practice of the company, and secondly, effectiveness and efficiency of the quality system. In the final stage, the certification body shall carry out the analysis of audit results and in the case of positive results decide on issuance of the Certificate.

The presented procedure and composition of the phases are common for certification of quality systems both by Russian and international certification bodies.

Development and implementation of the quality management system in the organization and its certification according to the international standard makes it possible to maintain the quality of products at a consistently high level. Certification of the quality management system includes the requirements for quality management systems of companies and is aimed at improving the activities of the organization. Certification of the quality management systems is a form of voluntary confirmation of compliance of the quality systems with the specific regulatory requirements.
